Contact your servicer before a payment becomes difficult

Turn an expected payment shortfall into a focused discussion by checking the due amount, explaining timing and asking about documented options.

A businessman engaged in a phone call while reviewing documents in a modern office.

If you can see that a payment will be difficult, gather the facts and contact the servicer before relying on an informal workaround. A conversation may reveal available options, but it does not itself change the contract. Your goal is to establish the account's status and obtain clear next steps.

Describe the shortfall in numbers and dates

Write down the next payment amount, due date and the amount you expect to have available. Explain whether the problem is a delayed paycheck, a temporary expense or a longer-term income reduction. You do not need a dramatic account of every household detail to make the timing clear.

For example, a hypothetical borrower can pay $180 of a $300 installment this month and expects normal income next month. That is different from a borrower whose ongoing monthly income has fallen by $500. The servicer needs an accurate picture to discuss relevant options; an unrealistic promise can create another missed arrangement.

Ask what is available and what it changes

Ask about eligibility, required documentation, interest during any pause, fees, payment amounts afterward and how the account will be reported. If an option only moves the due date, check whether it solves the actual shortage. If it extends repayment, request the effect on total cost.

The CFPB recommends contacting an auto lender or servicer promptly when payment trouble arises. That guidance does not promise that every request will be approved. Other products have their own assistance processes.

Leave with an actionable record

Record the date, representative or case reference, documents requested and the next deadline. Ask whether an application is pending or an arrangement is already approved. Save the written confirmation and verify any changes to autopay separately.

Do not assume that a partial payment prevents a late status, collection step or other contractual consequence. Ask how it will be treated before relying on it. A payment inquiry or application for help is also not automatically a pause in enforcement.

If the proposed terms are unclear, request an explanation in plain dollars and dates. After the conversation, check the account display and upcoming statement against the written arrangement. Keeping the process documented helps you identify quickly whether the promised change actually took effect.
