Verify disbursement details before accepting funds

Confirm net proceeds, payment recipients, timing and the first repayment before a loan is funded.

The approved loan amount and the money reaching your account may be different. Fees can be deducted, funds can be sent directly to a seller or creditor, and the transfer date can differ from the signing date. Confirm these details before treating the proceeds as available spending money.

Reconcile the amount leaving the lender

Ask for a written breakdown of the contractual loan amount, any deducted charges and the net amount sent to each recipient. The CFPB describes fees on personal installment loans; your own disclosure determines the actual charges.

In a hypothetical loan with a $5,000 face amount and a $200 fee deducted at funding, the deposit is $4,800. A $5,000 invoice would still have a $200 gap unless you supply that difference. Do not assume a funding shortfall means a bank transfer failed before checking the agreed deductions.

Verify the destination independently

Confirm the account number through the lender's secure process. For direct creditor payments, match each recipient and reference to your existing account. A name alone may not identify the correct balance.

If payment instructions suddenly change by email, verify the change using an established contact method. Do not rely on the phone number supplied in the same unexpected message. Keep the final instructions and confirmation private.

Understand timing and availability

Ask when the lender initiates the transfer, when the recipient may receive it and whether additional steps can delay release. A quoted processing time is not necessarily a promise that money is spendable immediately after signing.

For consolidation, continue monitoring old accounts until payoff is confirmed. A pending payment does not mean an upcoming minimum payment has been satisfied. Ask the relevant servicer how to handle a due date that falls during the transfer.

Connect funding to repayment

Confirm when interest begins, the first due date, payment amount and servicing contact. Put the payment into your calendar before using the proceeds. If an automatic payment requires separate enrollment, do not assume it is active because the lender has your bank details for disbursement.

After funding, compare the actual deposits or creditor payments with the written breakdown. Report a discrepancy promptly and retain the records. A clear handoff should account for every dollar sent and identify the first obligation that follows.
